Pedals Delivery is looking for a mid-level Java developer to improve and maintain our Grails website and API. You will be involved at all levels of the web dev stack from the front-end to the database and be expected to contribute to major architectural decisions.

As the second developer in the team, you will need to be experienced enough to carry out work on your own initiative and with minimal guidance. We would expect you to be comfortable working in a startup environment where there are few rules and procedures and things are generally quite chaotic. You must be willing to be thrown in at the deep end on an almost daily basis.

What Pedals is

Pedals Delivery is an affordable, on-demand and environmentally sustainable same-day bicycle courier service. We are dedicated to building a community of cyclists who are treated fairly and are committed to making it as easy as possible for regular cyclists to make some extra money in their spare time. Our products include, delivery within 90 minutes, within a specific one-hour slot and hiring cyclists by the hour.

Where Pedals is going

Launched in late 2015, we have received plenty of interest in our services since then and have been working with some of London's most exciting startups including Pip & Nut, Apidura and Ohayo Tomorrow, pedalling their products around London.

At this point, we know our business model works (we have been generating revenue from the very beginning). We are now gearing up to push the model to its limits and propel us through our next phase of explosive growth.

Why we need another developer

We now need more hard working people to join our team of clever, pragmatic and very motivated people. We have recently begun work on building a full-featured API so that we can more easily connect our customers with our services and, in time, power a native mobile app for our cyclists. There are also a huge number of exciting projects to automate and streamline our business processes so that we can scale up effectively.

This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to major architectural decisions at a very early stage in the company's history.

You get to work on:

  • RESTful API development
  • Mobile app development
  • Maps/Geolocation
  • Real-time tracking
  • Event-driven systems
  • Optimising a logistics operation (preferred cyclists, batching up jobs, route optimisation)

Technical skills

Pedals is a web-app built with Grails, therefore, web development skills, in general, within the context of a Java ecosystem, are most important.

  • Java / Groovy
  • Grails and/or Spring framework
  • TDD
  • MySQL
  • JS / HTML / CSS
  • RESTful API development experience

Nice to have

  • AWS (Elastic Beanstalk)
  • Native mobile app experience
  • Docker
  • Geo/mapping experience
